Founded on May 9, 2013, Plastic Bank was created by David Katz with a bold vision. Plastic waste should not be a problem to ignore, but a resource that can drive positive change.
Plastic Bank operates in coastal communities where plastic pollution and economic vulnerability intersect. By assigning value to discarded plastic, the organization helps prevent waste from entering the ocean while creating income opportunities for local collection communities.
This model addresses two global challenges at once: plastic pollution and poverty.

How Plastic Removal Works
Collection

Verification
All collected plastic is sorted, weighed, and securely recorded through Plastic Bank’s digital tracking system to ensure accountability and transparency.
Community Support
Collectors receive fair compensation for the plastic they collect. This income helps support access to essential resources such as food, education, healthcare, connectivity, and digital financial services.
Recycling and Reuse
The collected plastic is processed into recycled feedstock known as Social Plastic®, which can be reused in the production of new materials and packaging.
